Report found that 3,046 sex offenders are living in federally subsidized housing. There are a total of 1,121 sex offenders currently living in Queens, according to a press release from Schumer’s office. This includes those with a low, moderate or high risk of repeating the offense and those whose risk level still has to be determined.

Grand Junction Housing Authority Opens Waiting List

The Grand Junction Housing Authority plans to reopen its waiting list for Section 8 housing vouchers from Monday to Sept. 11.

Agency officials said there are five open vouchers out of 72 allocated to Moffat County by the state.

Section 8 vouchers are government-sponsored and pay all or some of a person’s rent depending on income and family size.

Those who have disabilities or disabled children, or who are elderly or part of working families, will get preference over those who do not meet the above criteria.

Current Moffat County residents also will get priority over those who live elsewhere.

Anyone interested in applying for the program can pick up an application from Moffat County Social Services, 595 Breeze St.

The Social Services office also will accept new applications.

Antonson, who also is a former director of the Moffat County Housing Authority, said GJHA officials still are working to transition control of local Section 8 vouchers to Moffat County.

Grand Junction authorities assumed control of the local program after the Colorado Division of Housing ended its contract with the Craig-based Independent Life Center in fall 2008.

GJHA is legally entitled to transfer vouchers at any time with the Division of Housing’s consent.

However, according to a December 2008 intergovernmental agreement with Moffat County, GJHA maintained it would not begin transferring local Section 8 vouchers out of the area until June 30, 2010, unless authorized by the Moffat County Commission.

Pinellas County Housing authority seeks millions to renovate complex

The St. Petersburg Housing Authority hopes to get millions of dollars in federal stimulus money to renovate the city’s largest public housing complex. The complex was built in the 1970s, and it sits on a prime piece of downtown St. Petersburg real estate, located right next to Tropicana Field. It contains 486 units, but only 47 people live there right now. A few years ago, the housing authority tried selling that site to private developers. A lawsuit and the economy eventually killed those deals. Now the SPHA said its going to retain ownership.

At a city council meeting Thursday night, executive director Darrell Irions said he’s applying for more than $16-million in federal stimulus money to upgrade the affordable housing.

“So, that’s our plan: demolish the Graham site, build back 50 brand-new units, one and two bedroom units on that vacated site,” he said. “Rehab the 150-unit Rogall building.”

Commissioner Wengay Newton said he thinks the plan is “great.”

However, Commissioner Jamie Bennett said he is concerned about the number of units, as the plan calls for lowering the density in the building by about 50 units.

“If my math is correct, we are going from 486 units to 155,” he said. “So, I mean, that’s a big drop in availability of housing people.”

Irions said he has a reason for that.

“We don’t want to just stack people on top of people, particularly poor people or people who have issues,” he said.

The housing authority should know by the fall if its been awarded the federal grants.

If awarded the grants, the SPHA said the new project will be complete in about four years, and that once the upgrade is done, people will not be able to tell that it is low-income housing.
